Christmas Domain Names

November 27, 2007

I like to target true niche topics, topics with traffic but not as much competition. Makes it easier to get search engine traffic and turn a profit, Halloween is a great example. It has always been a huge niche for me, my first year promoting Halloween was amazing. I had spent about 15 to 20 hours crafting a site that would target popular “costume” search terms and took home around 25k.

One site, and two big pay checks, one from the Buycostumes.com affiliate program and another from my friends at Google (adsense). Since that time I have always targeted Halloween but have never hit it big like I did the first year. Over the years it has been harder to drive traffic with new websites via Google (although it still can be done – this site is a great example).

This summer with my new “domainer” hat on I went ahead and picked up about 30 domain names that target the biggest “costume” search phrases – their not for sale. I will develop more this winter  ;-) However I do have several domains for “Christmas” that I am listing for sale at Sedo. This is the first year I have developed any site for Christmas.

Like Halloween I picked up three names based on keyword phrases starting with “Christmas”, I spent about three or four hours setting up one site and will not worry about it until next year. It is already profitable:

Adsense Earnings: $5.39 since Nov 4, 2007
Ebay Earnings: $6.83 since Nov 4, 2007

Now I realize that 13 bucks or so is not going to break the bank, however If I would have parked that domain I would not have seen a dime (ok maybe a dime). What is more exciting is that the traffic to this site will continue to build over the next 25 days and so will the income  ;-) When you have ten of these sites working for you, or maybe 100 you can easily make your house payment and eat steak for dinner. Next year the site will most likely do better than this year, this is my set it and forget it mentality. I also like to think of it as “drive by web development”. It works with the right set of seo tools, and the domain name is a big part of the success.

    Brian,

Nice video, hope you sell all three. They are great names, I would love them but I am way over my annual budget this year and can’t stay away from TdNam. Then I click on the link to freshdrop.net from your site and I love how it works. But good luck to you and keep the advise comming.
    Happy Domaining!

    Hi Brian,

I discovered your blog about one week ago and I find it very refreshing.

You are doing a great job with the videos as well.

On the subject of Christmas I thought this link about the Auction at Sedo for the domain Christmas.com would be relevant for your post and readers.

    Here is the link http://www.itnews.it/2007/1123155801996/sedo-unwraps-its-christmas-co-uk-internet-domain-name-auction.html

Kind regards from Down Under :-)

    hi

I am a complete novice when it comes to the internet and have just started experimenting with domain parking. Firstly i would just like to say thanks for all the advice. BUT, I have a question, you say you bought a few christmas domains and wanted a quick turnaround as i purchased a domain http://www.its4christmas.com and i have had this domain for 6 days and i received an offer, since then i have the domain appraised but have been informed i cant sell the domain untill i have had it for 60 days is this true.

Please help as the offer i have recieved would certainly help kick start my domain portfolio.

Got something to say?
