Revenue Domains Part Two, Doubling Your Traffic & Profits
December 1, 2007
In part one of Revenue Domains I hit on the principle of finding expired domain names based on “seo ranking aspects, old website history, quality inbound links and other elements”. Once the domain has been targeted and acquired the next step is to create a one page mini site, all we really need to do at this point is to add 300 to 600 words of unique content to the homepage and add adsense for monetization. I also create a 404 page with adsense on it to make sure all visitors have a chance to click some ads
I simply add a bit of content and a large adsense ad box.
Of course I optimize the sites title tag and make sure the basic onpage seo factors are covered. At this point I forget about the site for a month or two and then check in, I can watch for traffic via adsense which I check a few too many times a day. If things are on target after about 30 days I will have some targeted search traffic and hopefully some income from adsense ads, and or affiliate product purchases.
Each Site Pays It’s Own Way …
Often times these types of old domains will rank quite well right out of the box and that is the goal. Every website must earn it’s keep, so my first goal is to pay for the cost of registration and the expired domain fee. Some times this happens within days, other times it might take a month or two. Each is fine, I have enough sites to keep me busy.
My Goal For Each Site Is $3 Adsense Income A Day
3 x 100 = $10,000 a month
3 dollars daily x 100 websites = $300 a day in adsense income x 30 = $9,000
Yea I know it does not add up to ten k a month – but it’s close enough!
Step Two – Ramping Up Traffic & Revenue
Once our site has earned enough to pay the expired domain fee and the cost of registration it is time to spend a bit more on the domain, heck it is a good bet by this time. In order to ramp up earnings I need to ramp up the site traffic, it’s a fair bet to think that if the homepage ranks well additional pages may also rank well and drive additional targeted traffic.
So I need targeted content, in the form of articles. I hire out at RentACoder.com, I am usually able to find a decent writer for just under 6 to 8 bucks per article. I will research articles for the site based on these factors:
- What are people search for in this given topic
- Advertisers are paying for what types of search phrases
I am interested in top bids per keyword and also just how much advertiser competition their is for a given phrase. I can get a rough idea of all of this info by using the Adwords Keyword Bid tool. It provides keyword phrase suggestion with lots of detail including:
- Top bid price
- How much traffic the phrase got last month
- How much traffic the phrase get’s on average
- And most important how much advertiser competition their is for the given term
I usually like to pick out phrases that have as much competition as possible rather than choosing the top bid. The reason being is that if their is little competition for the top bid and someone clicks an adsense link near the bottom of our page they might be clicking on an advertiser in the fifth or sixth bid position (low bid due to not many people bidding on this term).
Instead choose terms that have lots of advertisers fighting for traffic and your click prices will average out higher (in theory anyway). I then choose between 10 and 35 article titles (search phrases from adwords keyword tool) and paste them into a note-pad file that I save on my desktop. I then log into RentACoder.com and post a job for “unique content articles based on xxxx niche topic”. Within a few hours I will usually have 5 to 10 bids on the job, many will be quite expensive, and others will be quite cheap. I usually hire middle of the road, trying to find people I can trust to do good work in the future.
I also make sure to leave plenty of instruction about my project, how I want to article written, length, how the files should be saved. This saves me headaches later. Once I select a writer I then simply wait for my first batch of articles which then get placed on my site, and in time will bring in additional search traffic and revenue.
The key is to develop a formula:
- First I do this
- Then I do this
- Next I add that ….
- Take check to bank ….
- Bla bla bla
Over a period of several months you can usually flip a domain for a profit fairly easily. At this point you have a domain in your portfolio that is making at least $3 a day and often much more. Right now I am in the process of flipping a dental site I purchased for around $40 ….in the last two weeks the best day with adsense was about $8
I am sure there will be better days to come!
In part three of Revenue Domains I will explain why I use Wordpress for many of my sites and why it is often a great choice for content website.
To Your Success,
Brian J

Hi Brian,
Great Video. In this video you talk about developing your site to generate income through adsense or yahoo ads. In some of the earlier posts you were talking about the ebay affiliate program and BANS. Do you develop most of your sites to earn money from the ebay affiliate program or through google or yahoo advertisements? Is there a reason to do one over another for a particular type of site? How do you decide?
All the best,
Ted Sudol

Hey Ted
I use all of the programs you mentioned:
- adsense
- yahoo pub network
- ebay
I also use both BANS and Wordpress to crate my sites, If I feel I am going to add considerable content than wordpress makes more sense. I also think my wordpress installs are much stronger as far as getting ranked quickly and staying their.
I use BANS on sites where I think I will not spend a lot of time or effort -
That is the short version anyway ..
Brian
Brian,
Quick question for us newbies, how do you set up a 404 page?
Great series
Keep up the good work,
Ron
Hey Ron,
Most wordpress themes already come with a 404 page within the theme. So all I need to do is edit that page of the theme, pretty straight forward.

I’m confused…do you develop your websites or park them? Or both? I have 200+ domain names and the prospect of developing full websites for them in my limited spare time is daunting, it’ll take me a couple of years. It’s just a part-time occupation for me but I’m getting next to nothing parking them.
Hi Lp,
Well I do both
I am a domainer / affiliate. Sometimes it just makes lots more sense to create a mini site in several hours rather than parking. I park most of the domain names I pick up which I plan on developing at some point in the future or for names based on emerging technologies.
For expried domains I usually crank out websites that far out earn parking. This lets me eat steak instead of hot dogs.
