Internet Marketing Newbie? Domaining Is A Great Way To Get Started

September 5, 2007

Whether your a seasoned online marketer or just getting started with internet marketing you need to take a serious look at expired domains. When it comes to making money the bottom line is traffic, sites that drive targeted traffic make money – it is as simple as that.

With that being said doesn’t it make sense to purchase domains with with “built in traffic”?

Since April of 2007 I have revitalized my online business and increased my earnings in this very manner. I am so passionate about domaining and expired domains that I have launched this site to share my experience with “domain parking” and other domain monetizing ideas I have used.

So lets look at the typical method most affiliate and internet marketers would go about creating popular website that makes money via affiliate programs, product sales or advertising (such as Google Adsense or the Yahoo publishers network).

Typical Marketing Method

  1. Chooses a niche based on research of a product, service or hobby that many people search for online.
  2. Registers a new domain name based on the niche.
  3. Begins to develop a website using any type of content management system, a blog, or simple static html pages.
  4. Launches site with ten pages of content, site get’s indexed with Google fairly quickly. However Yahoo and Msn take a bit longer to get the new site into.
  5. Continue to add pages to new site, hoping to get more pages indexed by the popular search engines.
  6. While working to create new content site owner also tries to get other sites within his or her niche to link to the new site.
  7. After three months all search engines have indexed the homepage of the new sites. However no pages are ranking for any major keyword searches.
  8. Site owner continue to try to get inbound links to a site – something that all webmasters know is very time consuming and often results in lack luster results.
  9. Site owner continues to also add additional content.
  10. After one year site begins to rank for competitive terms and is now making size able money and is profitable.

Expired Domain Method

  1. Marketer spends time learning about expired domains, where to buy them, what to look for. Marketer buys ebooks on the subject, reads reports, visits forums and does what ever it takes to get educated on the subject.
  2. Marketer develops a list of 50 to 200 niches online that he or she would like to get into. These niches should have a fair amount of search traffic, niches can either be about products or services but should be commercial in nature.
  3. Marketer starts visiting expired domain companies such as Snapnames, Pool & Godaddy for expired domains.
  4. Marketer does not care which type of domain he or she purchases as long as the domain name and former website were about one of the niches on the master niche list.
  5. Marketer looks for expired domains with inbound link popularity, pagerank and history. All of these factors should be analyzed. Inbound links from crappy scraper sites will yield sub par performance. However quality links from quality sites that are still present will often result in excellent rankings right out of the box.
  6. Marketer sorts through hundreds (thousands often) of domains in order to find a handful of gems. Once a gem has been spotted the marketer shows up on the day of auction and bids on the domain.
  7. Marketer tries to not get into a bidding war but is willing to spend accordingly (everyone will have to balance this amount on their own).
  8. If the marketer is able to acquire the domain he or she launches a new site as soon as it is in his or her possession. It goes without saying that the new site must be the same exact topic as the former site.
  9. Marketer does this ten times in one month – understanding that some domains will be winners and some will be loosers. However if the marketer does proper research finding 5 winners out of the first ten names is very do-able.
  10. Marketer realize that it will take up to 45 days to see how the domain name will perform. However often times these types of domains will rank well within days of getting indexed by the search engines.

The perfect way to get started for a newbie?

Maybe. What makes domaining attractive is that for those willing to spend a bit of time researching traffic can be ramped up many, many times faster than starting with a traditional “new” domain name. Newbies can also simply “park” a domain and can begin earning money from companies like Sedo and NameDrive. Since many of these expired domains can often have thousands of links pointing to them they will often enjoy visitors from related sites that can result into revenue. Other simple methods can be used for site creation like the website script “Build A Niche Store” that allows for quick and easy site creation based on current products for sale at ebay.

Just How Much Are These “Expired Domains”?

Expired domains are sold off “auction” style, often times these type of domain name are sold for hundreds of dollars. However I have found many “gems” for under $50 – a price well worth the investment. When I first got started with domains I thought about how much I have spent on ebooks, membership sites, scripts, software, reports and site templates. If I was willing to spend my money on a book that would teach me how to make money (or so was the claim) I figured it made sense to buy a domain that actually had the elements of a high traffic site (like inbound links, listings at dmoz or Yahoo, ect).

Understand that expired domaining is tricky and you can spend a lot of money, however if your smart their is also a lot to be made.

To your success,
Brian J

Brian excellent.. you really overdeliver.. thanks helps a lot.

Just curious, where do you buy your expired domains, maybe you can do a video explaining the places you go and buy domains from?

Also are you bidding to get them ?

Are you dealing with ones about to expire or ones deleted?

Are you buying .com or all types of .net, .org etc..

Are you researching the domain to see if its a keyword domain being searched on?

    thanks

    Dave,

I pick them up any where, Snapnames, Godaddy … what ever.

I will purchase a .com, .net, .org, .biz or .us

I don’t care about the name per say … I care about the ranking factors such as:
    -age
    -inbound links
    -quality of links
    -dmoz or yahoo listed

Also, one thing that helps me is that many domainers dont go after domains with dashes or numbers. I could careless about that fact, I am intrested in domains that may rank well in the future.

In your opinion what would be some efficient ways of determining the age, inbound links, quality of links, etc.? Are there tools available to check these sort of things?

I picked up a piece of software that has really helped me a lot. It is a great help in determining all of the above (in your comment) and much more. You can find a review here at my other site:

What do you do mostly on your domain? Where’s money coming from?

    Parked or develop the domain?

    Thanks
    Orca

    Orca,

Mostly from developed domains - however I use many tools that allows me to “develope” quickly. Nothing spammy, content is mine, …

I look to scripts like bans, and I use lots of wordpress enhancements. Takes work but it is worth the effort.

Got something to say?
