Domain Research Tool - Getting The Most Out Of DRT
November 13, 2007
I spend a lot of money on Internet Marketing software tools, web site scripts and ebooks. Like anything in life some are better than others, one of the best investments I have made when it comes to domain research has been picking up the Domain Research Tool. It has so many features and functions and has allowed me to register some great names on the cheap. It has also allowed me to *cherry pick* a few great expired names from the hundreds of thousands that expire weekly (daily for that matter). One reader wrote me asking some questions about the tool, I thought I would reply here for everyones benefit.
Like you I like to do my domain research in bulk once a week. So I load the upcoming weeks domain lists in and apply the filters and start searching. I tried it with DRT and I’m getting some extremely long scan times. At first I thought I would load the whole list in and then do the scan on that. The list 0f 230,000 domains loaded fine but after 1 hour of scanning it was less than 1% done. So then I thought I would apply some filters. I eliminated dashed and numerals and put some key words in. This time it reduced the list of 230,000 to 6,000. Started the scan on that and after about a half hour I’m 1% done. So If I was going to let it run it would take 2 days for the scan.
Is this normal? Can you speed it up at all?
My Reply:
It is important to understand that DRT is capable of performing many scans and functions. You don’t always need to scan domain lists for all the criteria. It is also important to understand that the data is collected from various sources (read websites) these sources often change their coding and the program might not return correct data for a period of a few weeks until the Domain Research Tool team updates the software (which they do often).
Anytime I am doing “bulk” domain research I try to filter down my results as much as possible, I think you have the right idea with pulling away domains with dashes or numbers.
If those are the types of domains your after….
I often try to see what tools are available at various drop catcher sites like Snapnames, Tdnam and others. Often times you can narrow a list down at these places. If your able to do that then obviously your scans will be shorter. Also realize that you are asking for an enormous amount of data. Most serious domainers or internet marketers that use these types of tools in bulk do so via a web server. Often times running a program through a server greatly speeds up the process.
In my office I have a second dedicated computer that I use for these types of programs, (it is also my wifes surfing pc). Setting up a second pc allows you to be more productive.
How do you use DRT? What procedure do you use to get the names you want without getting overly long scan times.
This is a great question, simply because DRT does so many things. One method I have used is to simply search for available domains that have been generated from my custom keywords. I can take keyword phrases from wordtracker.com, nichebot.com or combine phrases to come up with thousands of combinations. This is a great way to find the best domain name you can for reg fee.
That and filtering, and sorting prior ….
I am using the proxy list - the 789 proxies reduced down to a list of 31 working proxies.
If your doing a lot with DRT, I recommend you download the “daily list” each and ever day. Add that list to your current “alive proxies” and then filter. Doing this over a two week period will result in a much larger list of proxies to use.
So what can I do to reduce scan times or what changes do I need to make to the scan times more reasonable? Or is this the way it is and I have to plan for it? How do you use DRT? Thanks in advance for your help.
Filter, filter .. filter. Or simply address the problem.
Get another pc, put the tool on a server, ect …To your success …

I having alot getting this tool to do what I need it to do. I have so many questions and the documentation isn’t really helping. What I’m looking for is more real world use like what you did in this video.
So, what I’m wondering is do you have or do plan on creating anymore videos? For instance, how input a bunch of keywords (like 200) and filter them against a list?
Or, why are there question marks in the columns? What does that mean when you see that?
